About the Event

Hugh Crozier’s Incomparables

Hugh Crozier - piano and bandleader

Paula Jackman - reeds

Alistair Allan - trombone

‘Magic’ Mike Henry - cornet

Hugh Crozier is recognised as one of the best exponents of the Jelly Roll Morton style of piano playing and his music. He has been playing the piano for over 50 years and was attracted to jazz by hearing Jelly Roll Morton’s 1923 recording of Wolverine Blues. Hugh is an outstanding solo performer, specialising in early styles of jazz piano playing, as well as featuring in many popular traditional jazz bands.

He was a founder-member of the Blackbottom Stompers, later performing with Steve Lane, Bill Brunskill and Bill Kerr’s Whoopee band. He played a long residency in Düsseldorf, Germany with Mac White. On August 3rd he teams up with regular collaborators, Paula Jackman and ‘Magic’ Mike Henry.

Clarinet and sax player, Paula Jackman, likewise has had a long and distinguished jazz career, currently leading her own Jazz Masters band. Her influences range from Barney Bigard to George Lewis, to Sidney Bechet, to Ben Webster.

‘Magic’ Mike Henry first played in brass bands in his native Lancashire at age nine. Following graduation from the Guildhall School of Music in 1997, he played with the Pasadena Roof Orchestra from 1978 for twelve years. Over the years he has played in all the major concert halls in England and Europe, with TV, radio and recordings, along with the occasional classical date with the London Symphony Orchestra, as well as session work in all styles of music.
