After the death of her husband, Elizabeth (Judi Dench) ponders her life anew, and comes to believe that her happiest days were during the uncertainties of WWII, when she played the saxophone with the Blonde Bombshells, an all-girl dance band. Retrieving her saxophone from mothballs, she starts busking and then hatches a plan to track down her bandmates for a gala reunion at her granddaughter’s school dance. Flashbacks evoke the great dance band era of the 1940s. The all-star line-up of band members includes Leslie Caron, Joan Sims, Billie Whitelaw, Olympia Dukakis, Cleo Laine, June Whitfield and Ian Holm (and yes he is male). Written by Alan Plater, this is a delightful, feel-good musical comedy, with terrific music from the Blonde Bombshells.
